At the urging of a friend I decided to give The Glass Castle a second chance and I'm so glad I did. I had read it when it first came out and can't imagine now why I didn't like it much the first time around--it just goes to show how much mood and timing can influence one's feelings about a book. I couldn't put it down and read it in one day, which was refreshing as it's been a bit since I've felt truly absorbed in a book. In light of my different feelings about The Glass Castle on first and second readings I'm going to set aside The Goldfinch for the time being as I just can't seem to get into it. Maybe at a later date I can come to it with fresh eyes.
