This book was fantastic. My daughter was reading it and mentioned some German swear words so I thought I better preview it first. Wow. I've never read a book narrated by death before yet it was very cleverly written and so touching. Other than the narration being impossible it felt like it could have been a true story. I think before my 10 year old reads it she needs a history lesson so she understands a bit more about WWII and the atrocities that took place in Germany, in 5th grade she hasn't had much world history. The only thing she knows about Jews is that they don't believe in Jesus :-( Bad mommy.

A dark story that draws you in immediately and forces you to read along, even though there is little to like about any of the characters. Very strong character study. I found it necessary to read something else while reading this, just to keep my spirits up.
