In this very fun follow-on to Holes I was cheering for Armpit from the get-go. Less fanciful than Holes, it very nearly became a book about real life. The climax was more cinematic, but resolved into a real-world sort of happy ending. Sachar tackles issues of family discord, race relations, and life consequences with far less heavy-handedness than most YA authors that attempt the same.
