This novel reminds me of Jodi Picoult's novels. It's a light interesting read. I read Moriaty's book Center of Everything a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I didn't enjoy this book quite as much but I still thought it was good. I'll probably read something heavier soon, like Cormac Mccarthy. I feel guilty if I read only light things.

I read a review (nytimes?) which criticized Dave Eggers' choice to "fictionalize" this account. I felt that his literary style and storytelling devices helped me to connect deeply with the characters and that these connections might have been somewhat stunted if Eggers' approach had been traditionally nonfictional in nature. I enjoyed the pace and the flow of the unfolding of parallel events. I also liked the attempt to make the novel nonpolitical. Everyone suffers and everyone is petty.
