Having watched the film I was interested in reading the book. It was difficult to read at times - mostly because so many of the characters' lives are so sad - but it is exquisitely written and thus definitely worth the day or two it takes to finish it! Going to see the movie again now.

It's an interesting take on an alternate outcome between whites & natives. The book is written in diary form through the eyes of May Dodd, a woman who gave up her life in the east to marry a native in hopes to unite the two worlds. May ends up married to the clan chief, which puts her in an special point of view compared to the rest of the white women in her clan. The book gives a good depiction of native life in 1875 as well as the white man's desire for power.
