This is the first book I read of Hemingway's and for a long time I was afraid to pick up another, because I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much. A lot of people complain that it moves too slowly, but I've been to the area that the story takes place in, so that held my interest when the characters themselves weren't doing as much. For this reason I especially recommend it to those who've been to Europe (particularly Spain, France, Italy), because your own memories of the place will keep you hooked when he's drifting away a bit. It's just such a painfully beautiful book, and anyone who's ever been unable to have something they strongly desire (which is, uh, everyone) should be able to appreciate some aspects of this novel.
