Queen of Angels Murder mystery set in a late-21st-century America in which most of the population undergoes mental restructuring known as "therapy." Therapy is not technically required unless a person has committed a crime (in which case it is then forced), however almost all jobs require extensive mental testing to ensure a person is "stable" enough to meet the job requirements - effectively forcing most people to undergo therapy. Basically it is a society's attempt to remove man's sin nature, thereby creating (as one character aptly puts it) a race of angels rather than men. I was never sure from the book if Bear is a proponent of this or not. In any case it is a very interesting setting for the murder. The last third of the book is set inside the mind of the killer, Inception-like, as his brain is explored by neural experts. Unfortunately thus where the book got too strange for me, and I couldn't quite see the point of it all.
An important book to read and understand, unfortunately it's an easy book to put down unfinished. It's message felt a little repetitive to me, and I feel like it could have been condensed. Overall it significantly altered by purchasing habits. I would recommend it to everyone.
