A cool piece of Japanese period fiction, until you realise that it's NOT set in Japan. The only thing that boggled me about this book was why it wasn't. Set in a Japanese like world, it follows a member of a secret tribe after his family is wiped out. After being adopted by a local Lord, it quickly becomes embroiled in power and politics.

I made a vow to return all library books on time this year. And then I broke it when I got started on this one late and just couldn't give it up when the due date came. Really excited to read Spartina and find out how the whole story begins. Great writing, and Casey is clearly one of those rare-ish male authors with a real gift for female characters.

I loved this book! This is Sherry Kyle's debut novel (though she has published other books for younger readers) and she created a great story for adults in this book. When Claire inherits her mother's VW Beetle, she finds an old love letter in the glove compartment and sets out to discover writer. The setting (the California coast) is vivid, the characters engaging, and the plot intriguing.
