This is not as good as his other books. I was disappointed. Of course it's still good in comparison to so much other terrible stuff out there, it just didn't feel as fresh and witty or fun to read as his other books/stories.
I've read a number of Maguire's revisionist fairy tales, but this is by far my favorite. Everyone knows the story of Cinderella (or thinks they do!) Maguire reinvents the most famous of fairy tales by setting the events in Holland, and told from the perspective of the "ugly step-sister." What unfolds is an interesting glance into an unfamiliar culture and our startling empathy for the gifted yet woefully ugly Iris. Count on some racier plot points and brilliant narrative misdirection to revive the most recycled fairy tale around.
