I picked this up b/c I read almost every book out there that is animal-related. I saw that this book received 4-5 stars from everyone, so I thought it must be fantastic. However, I was slightly disappointed. There WERE some parts that were animal-focused, and what the cover described, as the main character goes through a divorce and heals, in part because of the relationships she has with her animals. But, I found that the majority of the book, about 9/10ths of it, was just a basic chick-lit book about divorce and new relationships. The main character's relationships with her animals, especially considering she is a vet, could have been much more developed and detailed. I found that her interactions in the novel with her pets were just a simple "watching the animals" or spending time healing an abandoned horse, were just kind of an aside, an add-on, not nearly the focal point as the cover describes. There were more references to her relationship with her ex-mother-in-law and her teenage daughter's break up, and her friend with the sick husband, than there were to the animals that are in the title. I had originally had this on the pick list for our book club to vote on--I'm kind of glad it didn't win b/c I don't think it had the substance and subject matter that I originally thought.

This above all, to thine own self be true. Plenty of words of wisdom here, plus it's a good story. And Hamlet's a kook.
