This National Book Award nominee is a compelling piece of historical fiction. Beautifully and heartfully written. The characters voices are strong and true. Bravo!

An interesting multi-perspective novel, which, I wont lie, confused me at some parts.

Great insights into Muslim culture, especially female experiences. Plot thin and rambling at times.

I subscribe to the magazine, and mainly checked this out from the library because when I gave my issues away I forgot to copy down some of the recipes. I've made a lot of these recipes, about 90% of them have been really excellent -- and also easy, quick, and reasonably low in fat if you avoid the cheese-based dishes. The authors have a mysterious attachment to fresh mint, which I find a bizarre addition to most foods, but other than that, I usually applaud their choices. Another nice touch: instead of being organized by course or by ingredient, the book is organized by season. (In case it's not obvious from the cover, everything in the book has already been published in the magazine, so readers won't be getting anything they haven't already seen.)
