After the gritty, dark tone of some recent fantasy books Before They are Hanged it’s nice to see an author who’s bit more light-hearted without being over-the-top unrealistic. I love a good caper novel, and this isn’t the bad one I’ve read, but it’s fun and fast (probably more like 3.5 stars than 4 but I can’t do half stars.) Overall impression: Fun novel with great characters and a good plot but marred with some first time fantasy writer mistakes. The Good: The plot: A trickster/caper novel absolutely must have a tight, well-thought out plot and Lynch definitely delivers here. Good twists and turns keep interest high throughout and unexpected deaths keep you emotionally involved with characters. The characters: Locke is a great anti-hero/protagonist. He is clever and tricky enough for us to like him, and he doesn’t just blithely succeed with everything he tries—we also see when his plans fail. The Bad: Exposition: This doesn’t seem like the first entry in a series with a grand, over-arching struggle/plot so I don’t understand why we need so many details about the world/city they live in. I appreciate the trouble the author has gone to in building a realistic world, but often I found these details to be uninteresting/irreverent to the plot. Novel structure: I didn’t like the Locke’s childhood/present day structure of the novel. Some authors are great at bouncing back and forth between times to build momentum (It for example) but this author didn’t seem to have the technique down. The “Interludes” distracted from the present day story and the structure seemed to far apart halfway through when we got descriptions of how societies/institutions worked instead of stories from Locke’s past.

http://angelerin.blogspot.com/2016/03... I don't really know what I could say about this book that hasn't already been said. I think this is one that a lot of people read while in high school. I didn't read it in high school like a lot of other classics because my sophomore year I stopped going to public high school and did home school. I ended up graduating a year early and that was great, but I sure did miss out on some classics I would have loved to read at school. Like this one! Of Mice and Men is a great classic book. It's super short, the writing is superb, and the story is emotional. There is something about Steinbeck's writing that just really made this story. This book could have easily been a throw away novel, a piece of garbage, but the words chosen just really make this book for me. Another thing I enjoyed is the connection I had with Lennie and George. Now I'm not saying I LIKED them, but I FELT for them and sometimes that is more important. I really did feel bad for both Lennie and George. Overall I really liked Of Mice and Men. There is so much impact in such a short story and I love books like that. My husband has been telling me for years to read this one and I just never have. I'm glad I finally did and thanks to my local library sale last year I got this book for like $0.50! I recommend Of Mice and Men for anyone looking for a short read, anyone willing to give a classic a try, and for fans of Flowers for Algernon.
