When you analyze by gender, there will always be exceptions, which Tannen acknowledges. But I found the text very readable for the lay person (i.e. you don't have to be a linguist to appreciate it), and her argument that men primarily use language to share information and negotiate position, where women primarily use language to build relationships, explains a lot of the miscommunication between genders.
