I wouldn't have picked this up on my own, but this was a gift. All things considered, it was a good choice for me since I like young adult fiction AND vampires. I also went through a Christopher Pike phase in my oh so long ago middle school years. (Although my husband...the wonderful gift giver did not actually know that. That said, I was intrigued by this book when I started reading it. I was quickly disappointed. This book was actually four books in one and each was more disjointed than the last. The main character Alisa (or Sita to her friends) is a (a 5,000 year old vampire). She didn't have much depth (and neither did the stories) beyond - I am a vampire. I am perfect, I am strong, I can do anything, I am invincible, Nothing can stop me. Oh by the way I like to kill and I don't feel bad about killing...it is who I am. There is something to be said about the fact that main character was secure in who (and what) she was and did not spend time trying to "become human" or "fit in" as in so many vampire books. And of course we find out that she IS invincible. BUT she doesn't learn or change or grow as a character. She was simply so cold (and arguably maybe that is how vampires would actually be...especially after being alive for 5,000 years) that I did not care one fig about who she was, what happened to her in the past, or in the present. There were some parts that were captivating and interesting to me (such as the mythos of how vampires came to exist) However, the entire story/book was so segmented (the books went from ancient vampire feud to modern day governmental research facility) that it was not enjoyable. My brain just kept going...huh??? Of course there is another book. I'm not going to go out and buy, but if I see it on a discounted rack somewhere I may consider picking it up and reading it.
