This book is a collection of essays from his literary column for the magazine "The Believer". Each month he lists the books he bought and those he read, and then he reviews the ones he read. I like this book (and the other two of his published literary essays, "The Polysyllabic Spree" and "Shakespeare Wrote for Money" which I haven't actually read yet) because they include his humor and when I am done, I have a whole 'nother list of books to read. Yay!
I had no idea the city I so loved treated its women this way. To learn that women had been struggling for equality since 1791 only to achieve success for the right to vote in 1944, the right to open a personal bank account in 1966, and the right to contraception in 1967, let alone the right to simply wear pants in 1920, is unbelieveable. The black and white photography shows the city and its times with great precision and beauty.
This 1957 classic piece of literary criticism changed the way we think about literature forever.
