627 pages This book is a mix of what I enjoy most in a book and what I dislike the most. Some of my favorite aspects included a believable historic setting (Highlands of Scotland), a little time travel and frequent Scottish dialect! The book starts out slow but I kept reading because I knew some time travel was forthcoming. The main character, Claire, adapts to her new life two hundred years in the past, living among strangers. For her own safety, Claire must marry a rugged and strong Scot, Jamie, who is very much a contrast to her "future" husband Frank, an Englishman. Intriguing, but not well developed or crucial to the story, is when Claire discovers she is not the only person around her who has travelled back in time. I'm not offended by love scenes, but this book was over the top in quantity and it was as if the author was in need of additional material so she threw in another pages-long "bedroom scene". Seriously, it became annoying. ***Spoiler ahead*** If the end of the book had occurred at the beginning, I would have stopped reading. The fairly graphic torture and rape from the Captain upon Claire's new husband sealed the deal for me. I read through because I was so vested already, but it made for an incredibly sad, disturbing read overall.
An excellent addition to any classroom study on ancient Egypt or hieroglyphics! Includes a bibliography and index.
