I chose this book because it's on Time's list of the top 10 novels of 2008 and because I'd read Stardust and liked it a lot and knew he wrote Coraline. I found it in the Young Adult section of Borders. But even though it's aimed at teenage readers I think adults will like it. I loved it and am amazed at the author's imagination. Even though it's an easy, fast read I forced myself to slow down and savor it, like a good tiramesu when you're still a bit hungry. The story slides effortlessly between reality and the supernatural, treating the graveyard like another neighborhood in the city. Look for the shout out to Hillary Clinton's "It takes a village....".

I read this and other Doonesbury books with great interest when I was pretty young. Now I get more of the jokes. I also remember how "grown up" these comics were--but now I see that Trudeau was still sort of a young punk when he drew them

Great book that really takes you back to your childhood. Hoye does amazing with the voices moving from children to men to women with ease.

made me cry. JB Phillips was a Bible translator in the 40s and 50s. he fought a battle w/depression, finally killing himself when the pain was to great. this book is by his wife and should be read - especially by anyone who thinks life's problems go away when you follow Christ. note june 2014. several people have questioned my writing that phillips was a suicide. honestly at this point i can't say/write where i picked up that piece of information. and since writing this review i've spent some years studying to be a librarian, i'm unable to site any sources. one of the final lines of "the price of success" is that phillips died of a prolonged illness. i may have taken that to mean his depression, or it might of led me to find a mention of it somewhere. (from 1976 -1996 i clipped every article on suicide i could find in newspapers and magazines, had hundreds.) but in the end the only thing i can be sure enough of for other people is that he died. his life shows that one can be a Christian even w/mental illness.
