A big fan of Graham Greene since I read Brighton rock as a teenager, I am also fascinated by the Orient Express train journey which takes 3 days across Europe. Passengers are just embarking after a bad channel ferry crossing from England. So far the prose is wonderfully concise but also film like in the vivid pictures it paints. Wonderful story about the journey & passengers but strong undertones of the dark side of unadventurous life - poverty, crime, murder, financial failure, revolution & anti-semitism. All this in a short readable book that seems like it would make a wonderful movie (although the 2 versions of it so far were big flops). what I like about Greene is that he writes good stories, full of suspense, adventure etc, very concisely with no wasted words & conveys a whole universe of fear & despair, all in a very entertaining way. This is a book for grown-ups who appreciate good writing.

In this second volume, the plot slows to a snail pace as the reader is plunged into the horror of the disappearing school girls. Who knows what lurks in the hearts of dead women and the past of the now-missing school mistress? Deadly ghosts, mental breakdowns, secrets and a disenchanted hero swirl together to bind this series to your sweet tooth like a jujube. It's not your favorite candy, but you can't seem to stop chomping on it...
