The book was WAY better than the movie...

Even if you've read My Life in France and have read/seen Julie and Julia, this is a fantastic read. Yes, much of the content is covered in the other books, but the conversations between Julia and Avis 1) add layers to the story of both Julia and Avis' lives (the letters cover politics, recipes, work, family issues, trips, etc. not covered in the other books), 2) are a delight to read, especially if you are like me and still send hand-written notes to friends and family because you prefer the deliberate, thoughtful act of letter-writing in an age of Twitter, email, and FB, and 3) show how painstaking the process of creating Mastering the Art of French Cooking actually was. But for me, the most enjoyable part of the book was that the letters took me back to the 1950s, to cocktail hour and typewriters, to intense political debates, to the culinary concerns of millions of American housewives...it was a joy to read.
