Harry has to face new threats and new adventures. The fifth book was spiced with more plot twists and in-depth portrayal of the characters. The things of the Ministry of Magic are not going too well, especially when Dolores Umbridge sort of takes over and imposes herself as the new teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts in order to keep an eye on Dumbledore. She is willing to quell any insurrection or protest from the student body who opposes her will and her torture methods (such as writing in your own skin as a punishment). The Order of the Phoenix is a group of "fighters" that want to stop Voldemort at all costs. The participants are our main characters and their friends and families, and several Aurors who are loyal to Dumbledore and sort of look up to him. Sirius Black maintains constant communication with Harry, something many of the members think it's dangerous. Harry learns that he is connected to Voldemort in more ways than he can imagine, and thus has to learn to shun Voldemort out of his mind. For that, Dumbledore assigns Severus Snape to teach him. However, Snape's methods are somewhat unorthodox and not of the liking of Harry. But Harry learns that maybe he and Snape aren't as different from one another as Harry thought. They share something in common: they know what it feels like to be laughed at. They meet a new friend, Luna Lovegood, a very eccentric and strange girl in many ways. She proves to be very courageous and loyal. Voldemort gets into Harry's mind and implants a false image of Sirius suffering in his head, for which Harry falls. Harry quickly seeks the Ministry, with some friends, and is soon attacked by the Death Eaters. Some members of the Order appear just in time to wage a battle. Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius cousin and a fervent servant of Voldermort, showcases her dark skills by killing Sirius. For me, Sirius Black died in a very pathetic way (though it did not take the sadness of it away). They return to Hogwarts afterward, and Harry mourns for the loss of his godfather. There was something that stayed with me after the book ended, and it was this: Harry asked Headless-Nick if he would ever see Sirius again, as a ghost. Headless-Nick told him that Sirius was a brave man who wasn't afraid to cross over, unlike him. That says a lot of Sirius' character, he is not afraid of death, but instead, embraces it as something natural that was bound to happen anytime soon. I think that was the main message of this book.

Brain Rules is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The author, John Medina, is a developmental molecular biologist (I think I got that right) that studies how the brain develops, and his passion for what he does rings throughout the book. The concept is simple -- 12 rules about how your brain works that, since you can't change them, you need to understand and work with for maximum efficiency. From getting enough exercise and sleep to how infants brains are tuned into exploration and how we adults can keep that drive to explore going, the rules are both straightforward and profound in their implications. One of my favorite pars of the book is that Medina, as a scientist, is very open about saying what science does and doesn't know, and ends each chapter with ideas for research that could further our understanding of each rule. He doesn't just talk about what we know, but also tries to spark the interest of others to push for what we don't know.
