Dark Parties is a suspenseful dystopian story from debut author Sara Grant. The strong main character Neva is a sixteen-year-old girl who has lived in Homeland, inside a protective shield called a Protectosphere. She, her parents and the other inhabitants of Homeland are completely cut off from the rest of the world. She has grown up being told that life beyond the shield is an unliveable wasteland. However she and her best friend Sanna have discovered that the government has fed them nothing but lies so they start to keep a list with the names of 'The Missing.' The list consists of friends, family and acquaintances who have suddenly disappeared without a trace. My only comment would be that the title 'Dark Parties' didn't seem appropriate as the dark party was such a small part of the book. I have noticed that this book has also been released under a different title - "Neva" which I'm not sure is that much better?? Perhaps - 'The Missing' would have been more appropriate. Either way this book is filled with romance, politics and action and will keep you turning the pages.

After reading Howard's End, I wanted to go back and reread On Beauty to see if knowledge of the former would help me enjoy the latter. Short version: yes it did. There's a lot to like about On Beauty. Zadie Smith's prose is a pleasure to read. Her descriptions of fall in the Boston suburbs jibe with my memories, and make me nostalgic. The real strength of the book is in the characters: Kiki and her kids provide the most pleasure. For all the talk about class, race, education, etc., Smith is a real expert at family dynamics. The other dynamics in the book are important and well done, but in the spirit of Forster, it is the family connections that drive the book. The books biggest failing is in its debates about beauty. Despite the title, I found the passages about academia and the two characters linked to them (Howard and Monty) to be too extreme, bordering on parody in what is otherwise a pretty realistic book. I just can't sympathize with a guy who bans all representational painting from his house.

Doesn't hold a candle to Jane Eyre, to which this book has been compared. The writing and symbolism and characterizations I have no complaint about, but as with Gone With the Wind, I can't entirely be satisfied with a book if I don't like the protagonist. As a portrait of a rather downtrodden and helpless woman, especially of one trapped by societal conventions and gender roles, this certainly is effective. Just not my style.
