Aside from a half dozen scattered typos and the occasional awkward turn of phrase (e.g., use of the word "against" in the phrase "her feet were cold against the mosaic floor" seems to imply the floor was warm, when the scene dictates otherwise), The Sekhmet Bed was surprisingly well-written for what I assume is a first novel. Ms Ironside has obviously done her research and artfully weaves in historical details without becoming pedantic, thus avoiding the dual traps common to historical novels of either sounding like a Wikipedia article or forgoing research altogether in laziness. My only quibble is that the novel takes a long time to fulfill the foreknowledge from the book description, leaving little that is unknown and exciting, and quickly exhausted. However, from the subtitle I ascertain that The Sekhmet Bed is meant to be the first in a planned series, and the book description is used to set up the series premise, so I am willing to overlook this flaw in this particular instance. I hope this novel is a success, because I am already looking forward to the sequel.
