What I liked about this book: -It makes me very, very proud to be Italian-American. I realize that there is much I take for granted about my upbringing that other people don't get to have. Venetian tables at weddings, Christmas Eve fish celebrations, and so on. I'm proud of both my culture and the way Trigiani describes it. Sometimes she's not so flattering, and that's even fun too. What I didn't like: The clothes and setting descriptions run a little too detailed. And, when authors describe fashionable clothes in detail, it alienates me. How can I relate to a down-to-earth leading man when he wears Fifth Avenue clothes? You have to choose if your characters are like us, or not like us. They can't be both. Trigiani is a very good writer, and I think she deserves more mass appreciation. If there were a book called "What non Italian-Americans should know about Italian Americans," I'd want Trigiani to write it. This is not that book. This is instead a romp through the crazy that is Italian-ness, and seems more geared towards Italians who "get" it. I loved it, but I don't think everybody would. To me that's a shame, but I know a writer can't please everyone. It pleased me, though!
