Two comments first: 1) This book is nothing like I thought it would be, and, 2) It is very slow. At times I was quite confused about where Styron was taking me, and until about half way, wasn't too keen overall. Not that the story until that point isn't good; it's a fine plot, it just doesn't have all that much to do with Auschwitz. From half way onwards, it's more of what I expected of Sophie's Choice. There are two central storylines - the main one following a young Southern writer named Stingo, newly moved to New York, and his infatuation with his neighbor, Sophie. Through their conversations comes the second - her retelling of her time in the concentration camp. This is VERY slow, comes in short spurts and not always in order. I had heard somewhat of the climax of these, so I was worried it was ruined for me already. Let me tell you, when it comes, it's hard to read. It's heartbreaking. The simplicity of the horror is what makes it so bad. Maybe taking up only half a page to one full page, I had to stop to process and think before I could continue. Having visited both Auschwitz camps, Berlin, and Anne Frank's house, I could feel the atmosphere and imagine the scenarios. The main plot is horrific too, and substantial in its own right.
