I find it difficult to rate childrens books in that I don't consider it a 4* now, but as a child I would have. I adored this book as a child - the characters were so different and Enid Blyton managed to create so many weird and wonderful worlds for the children to find themselves in. I actually forgot about this book for a while until it came up in conversation with some friends. I remembered how much I loved it as a child and went out the next day to buy a copy! I re-read it and obviously it was not as entertaining as it had been when I was a child but I did enjoy meeting the characters for a second time and feeling a sense of familiarity. Also, the situations they got themselves into still entertained me. Who wouldn't love to sneak out at night and find a magic tree with all those fascinating characters, only to climb the tree and enter other worlds? One thing I did notice with the book when reading it as an adult is the ingrained sexism among the children. The female child (sorry, names escape) is often told she can't do this or that because she is a girl. I suppose it is to be expected, the book is getting old now and times have changed a lot. I was just surprised - maybe because I don't remember noticing it when I was young (but then, why would I? lol)
