I really wanted to enjoy this book…I did. I read the synopsis and it sounded really cool and even though I wasn’t really impressed by her other novels (like the body finder) I was expecting this one to be good. But unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. I know this was classified as dystopia and while it does have some elements of that (oppression, social control etc.), mainly it read like a fantasy novel which was probably from the use of kings and queens…which sorry, as an urban studies major who studies cities, I can imagine many ways our cities and government will go in the future but going back to having kings and queens isn’t one of them. It just seems so old which set the novel back instead of in the future where it was suppose to be. The world building was also…nonexistent. Very big let down. The characters were all utterly boring. I mean what was Charlie’s personality like? I really couldn’t tell you, the only redeeming quality she had was how much she loved her sister. And AGAIN, another story about two people who fall in love but for unexplainable reasons…why did Max like her so much? Again, I couldn’t tell you. I didn’t realize until going on goodreads that this novel wasn’t a stand-alone…the ending sure felt like it didn’t need more. I don’t think I’ll read the rest of this series.
