Not quite as good as the first book in the series. I saw the ending coming from a mile off, and it seems like a lot of what's in this volume is there to set up future installments in the series. I didn't feel I had much insight into the main character, Rose. Things happen to her and she reacts more or less believably, but there wasn't anything inherently compelling about her. Some of the other inhabitants of the house where Rose has a room are so floridly bizarre that it's kind of hard to believe Rose would accept them, and interact with them, so calmly and without asking a lot more questions. It seemed to me that apart from Morpheus (The Sandman of the series' title), the most fully-developed character in the book is The Corinthian, a psychopathic killer who's a relatively minor player in the story. Other characters, like the weird sisters and Gilbert, were very difficult to get a bead on. As for Morpheus, his character was established in the first book, Preludes and Nocturnes. If I'd begun with this volume, I think I would've found him a little confusing too. Finally, while there are some interesting and darkly comic ideas in this volume---which I expect will be explored further in future installments---, the main plotline of this volume seemed a little pat to me.
