This book was a beautiful and touching exploration of women in historic China. (I would give a year or an era, but I'm not exactly sure). It's extremely unique in the way that it's written in that there are no true male characters. Of course, there are men, in the forms of husbands, fathers, brothers and suns, but very few of these are given much of an identity and they're mainly treated like inexplicable forces of nature to be dealt with. This makes for a very rare book, an exploration of the importance of women in women's lives. It's a treatise on sisterhood, forgiveness, kindness, and demonstration of love. These themes are handled so delicately that they never become maudlin. The book is finely drawn, absorbing and a wonderful read.
