A book of spectacular power, one where the sense of despair and futility is clear on every page. You feel as trapped in the rotting, wet, deadly and alive jungle as the marines of Bravo company that make up the book's main characters. We know war is horrible, yet it is easy to forget just how so. Now of course a book cannot meaningfully convey just how horrible and destructive, in every sense of the word, but this book paint a picture that allows the reader to perhaps understanding something. Marlantes writes with authority and experience. The book is absolutely riveting and I read this over a few days each time staying up 'til 2-3am each morning. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. One is struck by the age of the marines. Everyone is so young, yet expected to make decisions even someone with twice their years and wisdom would have no legitimate right in making. Interestingly, the book's greatest moments are not combat scenes, but instead quite conversations between characters. There is, even in what could charitably be described as hell, real love that binds these men together. It is a pity that not even friendship can protect these men against the immediate threat of an enemy bullet, or the lingering threat of truama that will likely haunt them for years to come. A powerful and masterful book.
