A 2008 Caldecott award winner, this is a kids novel like no other. Telling the tale of orphaned Hugo Cabret, who lives with his rather less than sober Uncle in the Paris train station. Hugo must wind all the clocks in the station, since his uncle is often too impaired to preform his job duties. Hugo doesn't mind though, and fills his days with memories of his father. Then one day he finds a ruined anatromic man, a mechanical marvel once sketched by his very own father. The robot man will write, and Hugo is convinced he has a message from his much missed parent, and he sets about to repair the automaton. His quest brings him a friend, and some trouble, and success in the end. What sets this novel apart from others is Selznick has replaed every word of the story that isn't dialogue or Hugo's thoughts with illustrations, and the entire book reads like a story board. Fabulous, informative and memorable, and as a bonus, you will end this book knowing more about special effects films and how they began!

I liked that there were a bunch of clues that I could figure out, and I solved what is sort of the first mystery before it was revealed, but even with just a few minutes left to go on audio I wasn't sure what the answer to the whole mystery was. And when I heard the answer, I wasn't like, what. I was like, "Ohhhhhhh, iiiiiiinteresting." read more...
