La vita nell’isola di Nantucket scorre tranquilla per la popolazione. Tutti si conoscono e non ci sono mai veri sconvolgimenti, a parte l’ondata di turisti durante i mesi estivi. Per questo il trasferimento della famiglia Delos, originari di Boston, poi emigrati in Spagna e ora di ritorno in Massachussets, a Nantucket, diventa subito il pettegolezzo preferito dalla popolazione. Dopo solo pochi giorni tutti ne parlano e Helen si sente irritata. Non sopporta di sentir parlare di questi Delos. E’ come se il nome continuasse a girarle in testa, come per ricordarle qualcosa, ma non c’è nulla.
