I loved this book. I'm reading it a second time, taking notes and trying to learn some of the vocabulary words that went right over my head the first time. Mostly Jewish words, but the more I do, the more I understand their beliefs and the broad contrast between the Hasidic Jews and the Americanized Jews. It's crazy to think that after losing six million Jews in the Holocaust, there would be room for hate and anger between the different Jewish sects. I don't get it. Being brought up in silence the way Danny was is also hard for me to imagine. I don't agree with his father's decision to do that or some of the other parenting methods he used. It frustrated me a lot but I really tried to see it from Reb Saunders view. People around the world are so different and have such different backgrounds, what may seem crazy to one, might be all someone else knows. This was a great reminder to me not to be so judgemental, and to have more compassion. I admire Danny's courage and Rueven & David Malters kindness and was just relieved Danny had them to look to, for support and guidence. My knowledge of Judaism is limited but I absolutely love studying other religions and can't get enough, so I'd say this is definitely a good read.
