I've given this novel a full score of "5" but wish I could it more!! Wow!!! I was completely enthralled with Rose and Ruby and their lives. Their perceptions of life are as different as any other siblings, whether they be twins standing alone or conjoined as Rose and Ruby are. Being permanently attached at the head, made it impossible for these sisters to go their separate ways when they needed, craved or wanted time alone. They had to learn to be respectful and accomodating to each other. Such love, intimacy, sharing and becoming one soul has carried them through 30 years! I adored and admired Aunt Lovey and Uncle Stash for their great love and courage for taking these abandoned 'craniopagus' twins into their home and raising them as their daughters. I don't think any other two characters could have been more well suited in this novel as parent's to Rose and Ruby! Aunt Lovey with her tough-love in 'forcing' them to learn to walk and not spend a lifetime in a wheelchair. Commenting to the girls to "show just how tough you are or can be". Aunt Lovey always had some lesson, some saying, some physical or material thing for them to see to enable Rose and Ruby to TRY and SUCCEED. Old Uncle Stash from Grozovo is a hoot in his own right! From his broken english to his stories of his childhood in Slovakia which he eventually takes Aunt Lovey, Rose and Ruby back to visit. Uncle Stash is as serious as he is comical. I found I "wanted" and "did" read this novel at an unusually s-l-o-w- pace, just so I could spend a longer time with Rose and Ruby. The novel has been so, so well written, that I really question: "Are Rose and Ruby REAL and the author, Lori Lansens has merely written it as fiction? Fantastic novel!! From the dust jacket: "The Girls, Rose and Ruby Darlen, were born joined at the head (craniopagus twins) in a rural farming community in 1974. Abandoned by their frightened teenaged mother, they are adopted by the eccentric nurse who attended their birth, and her husband, a gentle immigrant butcher. The sisters attempt to lead a normal life, but can't help being extraordinary. Now almost thirty, Rose and Ruby are the oldest living craniopagus twins in history. Rose has a passion for writing, and 'The Girls' is her version of life conjoined.
