When someone tells me they've never read a comic book or think that comics are something people should grow out of, I recommend this masterpiece of the form. Though it features all the trappings of the genre - costume clad heroes and villains, four-color fight scenes, and dialogue trapped in bubbles - it is completely unlike anything else before it, and though it has had many imitators, it is still the work everyone else is trying to live up to. It asks the ultimate question. If these heroes are so powerful, why don't they attempt to rule the world? The behind the scenes machinations and duplicities that are slowly revealed will surprise you, and the characters are so very human, when even a shred of inhumanity is displayed it's shocking. Oh, but don't bother with the pirate part of the book. Seriously, it doesn't have anything to do with the story.
