** spoiler alert ** I wish i could give it 3 and 1/2 star, but since it's not possible it's just 3. The main problem is, that the book is way too long as for the first in series (or first out of two???). 600 pages to describe just 40 days and awaking romance. The first half is wonderful: libraries, books, old manuscripts, witches, magic, vampires, daemons, conflicts - i loved it. All together fits perfectly. Until Matthew takes Diana to his mother's castle in France. Don't get me wrong - i loved Ysabeau. Her character is very convincing and it seems to be more 'real' than Matthew himself... but the way Diana's and Matthew's romance is described - i don't feel it. I understand vampires are possessive and very territorial - part of their charm, i really get it. But it's, in a way, boring: Matthew's obsessive jealousy about anyone getting near to his 'wife' (just after 3 weeks?), the way she easily adjusts to it and blindly follows him everywhere. It's like she lacks will. So the last 200-250 pages i've found rather disappointing. The possibility of genetic mutation, new race strangely reminds me of 'Rosemary's Baby' (i know the concept is different, but you have to admit it sounds familiar!). I will read the second part for sure. Hopefully it will get back on the same track as the first half of this one. I don't want characters, to move all the time from the kitchen to the living-room, talk and drink tee. And that's the main impression i have now, just 5 minutes after finishing the book...
