I have to admit that I struggled through parts of this book. Even though it is almost 500 pages long, it is written in a very slice-of-life style. It felt like a series of short stories rather than a novel. This would have been okay, except that I felt like it just wasn't going anywhere. It really comes together at the end, though. Betty Smith does a beautiful job of coming full circle. In the end, the book felt like a beautifully painted portrait of the main character. The author's writing style is unique and easy to read. So, bottom line, the book is sometimes slow and hard to slog through, but worth finishing.

When I was 12 I made my grandparents drive me to the library and I picked out this book. They must have been worried about me a little but at least I wasn't watching TV. It was scary and has a lot of big words.
