I just finished this book on the flight from SLC to Seattle today. What a great book. The language is amazing. The author has an incredible gift for description. I loved this book!

Morley ~ A man relays, in delicious detail, just how he plans to deal with his naughty girl. “Flaming” by Jean Roberta ~ Matthew gets sucked into helping Lorne who he’s been lusting after from afar, and a few spanks help get Matthew into character. “Helping Those in Need” by Gwen Masters ~ While helping out at the church to feed those in need, Chelsea ends up getting what she needs most from the new youth leader Andy. "Bottoms Up" is an enticing collection of stories which all involve spanking. Some focus on the one doing the spanking, while many more are from the perspective of the one being spanked. There is a welcome range of trying out for the first time, admitting to fantasies that have never before been acted out, taking play to a new level, and glimpses of relationships where spanking plays a large role in a D/s lifestyle. The stories are all well written and the different approach each author takes to incorporating the theme is quite intriguing. At no time did the stories feel repetitious, which holds the reader’s attention and makes reading that much more enjoyable. Several stories in this anthology stood out for me. Alison Tyler’s “The Hardest Part” is an exceptional telling from a sub’s point of view of the anticipation of waiting for a spanking that is deserved and the strength it takes to give control to another completely. Tyler taps into the emotions beautifully and the result is a captivating story. Sommer Marsden’s “Bossy” is fun and naughty while a women who is normally the one on the receiving end takes a turn as the spanker. It’s quite a ride as she taps into her dominant side and makes for an enticing story. “Reenactment” by Zille Defeu is one of my favorite tales with two women who like it rough and take things to a new level when acting out a medieval fantasy. It’s rough and a wild ride and yet it’s clear there is a strong bond between the women. Andrea Dale’s “Stuffing the Ballot Box” explores the dichotomy of a woman in complete control in her career who willingly gives that control over to her husband in the bedroom. This lends a balance to the woman’s life and their scene together is highly erotic. Finally, “Helping Those in Need” by Gwen Masters features a “nice” woman who has some naughty desires, and a youth leader who is willing to help her satisfy those needs. This was an intensely erotic story, with two characters who throw caution to the wind and is a story that is not easily forgotten. From a GLBT standpoint, readers should be aware that the majority of these stories feature heterosexual couples. That makes them no less erotic and steamy, but those looking to specifically read about gay and lesbian characters and spanking should be warned. A few stories feature contact between two men or two women, although not in a sexual way, including “A Firm Understanding,” “The Purple Balloon,” “Sorority Sister,” and “Tease for Two.” Of the twenty stories, three feature gay or lesbian characters: “Days,” “Reenactment,” and “Flaming.” From my perspective, “Reenactment” makes this anthology worth buying, and though not GLBT in focus, the rest of the stories are enjoyable and explore many facets of spanking. Overall this is a stimulating collection of stories that explore the eroticism of spanking in a variety of ways that will be sure to satisfy any reader.

This is a must have for anyone interested in Michel Foucault; the book contains some of his best essays dating from the middle part of his career. The absolute essentials are "Nietzsche, Genealogy, & History" and "What is an Author?" - I have resourced these two texts time and time again. However, the hidden gem of this book for me is the published conversation between Foucault & Gilles Deleuze. The interview/conversation functions in way to usefully clarify certain similarities between the thinkers' philosophies. This is, without a doubt, a first rate collection of essays.

this is the story of Atlas Powder in Senter, Michigan. from the inside: "The heretofore untold story of this plant and its people is an unknown hidden treasure in the mining era history of Michigan's copper country. This complex sprawled over 1815 acres of wooded glen with almost two-hundred special purpose structures and eleven miles of internal narrow gauge tramway. In its fifty year history over three hundred people were employed in this seldom discussed, little known complex. The manufacturing complex was self-contained with several distinctly specialized manufacturing operations, and for safety reasons many were separated by distances of several hundred feet and earthen bermed to a height of almost two stories. Closed now for almost fifty years, Father Time is obscuring the structures and the remaining workers from view, which is the reason for this record." this is a fascinating read about a dynamite plant, how it came to be, how the manufacturing process worked. interesting is the secrecy of the plant--this place according to old purchasing records--produced 100,000 pounds of dynamite every month in 1900 to the Quincy and Calumet & Hecla mining companies. a part of the Copper Country, an area that is now one of the newest national parks---the keweenaw national historical park--though i don't believe this particular area of the county (houghton) is included within the boundaries of the park. contrary to the ever-popular bashing of american business, that oh-so-delightful trend, this brief history tells of another way of business that is probably much more common than the myth american-haters are propounding today. the safety record the plant speaks to that matter. what would happen today? we've come so far, can i hear a hallelujah?
