Looking at the other reactions to Pynchon it's pretty obvious you either get it or you don't. If you do, it's bliss to read him. If you don't, it's torture, and you don't see why others like him. Someone said he's a writer who deconstructs the experience of reading. I love that. It's hard to describe how Pynchon scrambles your brain while you read him. It's unlike my experience with any other writer. I love to read, and I loved this book, but I was given it by a friend who kept insisting that I had to keep going through the first third of the book before it would start to make sense. I finally made it by taking it on a trans-Atlantic flight. He was right. After a complicated, surreal and LONG set up, the book took off, and I was hooked. I did not understand all of it, or get all the cultural references, or even enjoy all of it. But I think it's a masterwork, and it should be in the canon. As to the parts I did not enjoy--Pynchon likes to latch on to the repellent in any form, and he's good at identifying it and dumping it on you from out of nowhere. His point is to challenge your thinking at every level--back to the business of deconstructing reading itself. He does, and he doesn't mind grossing you out to do so. If I have an objection to Pynchon, it is here. I sometimes wonder if he goes there to make a point, or if he's just seeing if he can pee on your shoes and make you like it. I have no doubt he's a genius. Gravity's Rainbow is often compared to Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany. It's an accurate comparison. I need to reread both.
