I was a bit worried about this book from the copy on the back. It tries to sell the Krakatoa explosion as a primary cause behind the current global phenomenon of violent, radical, Islam. Turns out the book is much less concerned with politics with history, science, and the places the two meet. The book is really amazing in the breadth of coverage it offers, from the history of the colonization of the East Indies, to the history of the theory of plate tectonics (shades of The Discoverers) to an explanation of said theory and the mechanics of how the continents shift beneath us, and volcanoes jut out of flat ground. Oh, and he says some stuff about the Krakatoa explosion. The whole book is fascinating. The only time I thought it got a bit long was during the description of the actual explosion, where he seems to record every immediate result, every island flooded, every family killed, etc. Winchester writes with an infectious enthusiasm and includes footnotes throughout of great tangential pieces of trivia. While he discusses the Muslim uprisings that occurred in Indonesia soon after the eruption, he never really gets into current politics, thank goodness.
